About the artist
The artist María Ángela Rivero invites us into a territory where the visible becomes symbol and the intimate reaches toward the universal.
Her practice reveals a constant search for balance between the spontaneity of the brushstroke and the deliberate construction of form. The landscapes, figures and abstractions that emerge from her work do not merely represent; they open a space of resonance, a sensitive threshold in which viewers recognise themselves.
Rivero thus builds a language of her own, in which colour acts as a vital pulse and texture as the trace of time. Shaped by a deep connection with nature and memory, her work stands as a poetic testimony to resilience, fragility and permanence.
“I paint to come into contact with the vital pulse of nature, and with what, in silence, still has no name.”
In her own words
I spent my childhood in Tigre, Buenos Aires, a place full of life, where the streams overflowed with the rising tides, with lush vegetation and colours that changed with the seasons.
Then there was Villa del Lago, Córdoba, where our house faced the lake. Every year we spent three blissful summer months there as a family. A landscape of hills, of piquillín and peperina, of glittering mica breaking through the rocks, the odd iguana, and the fish darting about in the crystal-clear streams.
It was in these two places that I was blessed to absorb sensory experiences, discovering the world through nature.
That endless store of lived experience surfaces spontaneously in my work. I experiment with different media that give the gesture firm strokes: oil sticks I make myself in the studio, pigments, acrylics and oils, all on raw canvas, followed by a worked priming layer that shows through in the finished piece.
I studied at the Prilidiano Pueyrredón School of Fine Arts, but it was three great masters, through their teaching and their lives, who truly formed me: Miguel Ángel Vidal, Kenneth Kemble and Guillermo Roux.
